New Law Mandates Labeling of Food Origin

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Until now, only seafood was subject to the labeling rule, but under the revised 2008 Farm Bill, retailers of fruit, vegetables, meats, nuts, and other foods have until March 30th to label the country of origin. This is good news, as it will help those who wish to avoid products from China due to fear of food safety, as well as some products from Mexico which may have high levels of pesticides. However, many fear there are not enough resources to enforce the new rule. In addition, stores that sell less than $230,000 are not required to label imports and certain processed foods that are mixed together don’t have to be labeled.
